Black Friday Wal-Mart Violence: Police Taser Man, Arrest Grandpa

If they're not pepper spraying each other or rioting over waffle makers, Black Friday customers are being tasered by cops and being violently arrested for shoplifting
Beyoncé Shows Off Her Sexy Moves In “Dance. The arrest wasn't the only taser-aided cuffing of this holiday season. Miltord Patch reports that an officer used a stun gun to bring down a man involved in a scuffle at a Wal-Mart on Thursday night. Then there's the case of the grandpa who was either the victim of a violent police mistake, or a shoplifter taken down with appropriate force, depending on who you ask.

But police told a different story. They told MyFox that the man was trying to shoplift and when they tried to question him about the video game, he started "flailing his arms."Police used a leg sweep to bring the man down. He hit his head and had to be treated at a local hospital, police told the station. He's charged with resisting arrest and shoplifting.

Full CNN Republican National Security Debate

Washington (CNN) -- A Republican presidential debate on Tuesday focused on national security issues exposed deep fault lines within the GOP over how to grapple with the nation's challenges overseas.

The eight Republican candidates who took to the CNN debate stage in downtown Washington differed on a range of issues confronting the United States, including the war in Afghanistan, aid to Pakistan and cuts in defense spending.

The issue of illegal immigration also arose again as the newest Republican front-runner, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, called for a "humane" approach to immigration policy, a position at odds with many conservative activists who dominate key nominating contests in Iowa, South Carolina and Florida.

Gingrich stressed the importance of securing the United States border with Mexico and penalizing employers who hire illegal immigrants.

But he expressed sympathy for people who entered the country illegally and since became contributing members of society.

Blog: The CNN debate as it happened

"I don't see how the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families which have been here a quarter-century," Gingrich said. "And I am prepared to take the heat for saying, let's be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship, but finding a way to give them legality so as not to separate them from their families."

The answer was reminiscent of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's response to a question about a 2001 bill he signed that granted in-state college tuition to the children of illegal immigrants.

In a September debate, Perry said Republicans who oppose the legislation "don't have a heart" -- and his standing in the polls plummeted in the following days.

Romney, the party's de facto front-runner for much of the year, pounced on Gingrich's remarks.

"Amnesty is a magnet," Romney said. "When we have had in the past programs that have said that if people who come here illegally are going to get to stay illegally for the rest of their life, that's going to only encourage more people to come here illegally."

iReport: What makes a good presidential candidate?

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee who had one of her strongest debate performances of the cycle, also chided Gingrich.

"We need to move away from magnets, not offer more," said Bachmann, who is in single digits in the polls and pegging her candidacy to a strong showing in the Iowa caucuses.

The debate was held at Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in downtown Washington and was co-sponsored by the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, two conservative think tanks.

Gingrich entered the debate with fresh momentum in the Republican race and found himself in the spotlight for much of the evening.

According to a CNN/ORC International Poll released on the eve of the debate, 24% of Republican and GOP-leaning independent voters said they are most likely to support Gingrich for their party's nomination, with 20% saying they back Romney, who is making his second bid for the presidency.

Gingrich's four-point margin over Romney is within the survey's sampling error. A CNN poll released one week ago had Romney at 24% and Gingrich at 22%. Gingrich was at 8% in a CNN poll in October.

The new front-runner got the first question of the night, which sparked a feud with the libertarian-leaning Texas Rep. Ron Paul over the USA Patriot Act.

"I would look at strengthening it because the dangers that are posed are so great," Gingrich said about the legislation.

Paul, who has been sharply critical of the Patriot Act since it was signed into law by former President George W. Bush in October 2001, called it "unpatriotic" because it "undermines our liberty."

Paul took on the role of the lonely isolationist throughout the debate, calling on the administration to withdraw American troops from commitments overseas as a way to slash government spending.

He also questioned the point of humanitarian aid, including money to combat AIDS and other diseases in Africa.
Gingrich: U.S. look to Chile's reforms
Santorum: Profiling necessary
Romney: Military cuts hurt defense
Republican candidates debate security

"I think the aid is all worthless," Paul said. "It doesn't do any good for most of the people. You take money from poor people in this country and you end up giving it to rich people in poorer countries."

In the night's sharpest clash, Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman battled over the American military presence in Afghanistan.

Huntsman, a former ambassador to China and the sole candidate with diplomatic experience, said he wants to withdraw most American troops from the country and instead rely on Predator drones and a small contingent of forces to fight terrorists.

"Are you suggesting, governor, that we just take all our troops out next week?" Romney asked.

"Did you hear what I just said?" Huntsman fired back. "I said we should draw down from 100,000. We don't need 100,000 troops, many of whom can't even cross the wire."

When Romney said the president should rely on the generals on the ground, Huntsman again responded aggressively.

"At the end of the day the president of the United States is commander-in-chief," he said. "Of course you're going to listen to the generals. But I also remember when people listened to the generals in 1967 and we heard a certain course of action in Southeast Asia that didn't serve our interests very well."

The candidates were also pressed on how they would change airport security measures if elected president.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he would privatize the Transportation Security Administration.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said his administration would apply "more scrutiny" to Muslim passengers in airports, as did former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain.

"If you take a look at the people who are trying to kill us it would be easy to figure out," Cain said.

Later, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann dueled with Perry over his proposal to scrap all funding for foreign governments like Pakistan, which may not agree with American interests, and ask them to make the case for American funding.

Perry said the government should stop writing "blank checks" to Pakistan, but Bachmann called that proposal "naïve" because the country has nuclear weapons that must be protected.

"Al Qaeda could get a hold of these weapons," Bachmann said.

Montreal Fans Fight At Bruins vs. Canadiens Game

Maybe Rodney Dangerfield was on to something.

On the ice, Monday night's Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins game was a goaltending battle between Carey Price and Tim Thomas. Perhaps the fans at the Bell Centre wanted more scoring because this rather brutal fight broke out in the stands.

According to the Puck Daddy blog the fight broke out near the end of the tightly-contested game.

The rivalry between the Bruins and the Habs is one of the fiercest in the Eastern Conference. Last year, Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara nearly ended the career of Habs forward Max Pacioretty with a brutal hit that drove his head into a stanchion.

In recent years, Habs fans have not behaved well, rioting and setting police cars on fire after playoff games.

For those wanting to know, Boston squeaked past with a 1-0 win last night, extending their unbeaten streak to nine games.

WWE Raw results and reactions for Nov. 21 Survivor Series fallout show

Photo

WWE Raw Supershow tonight (Nov. 21, 2011) emanated from Hershey, Pennsylvania, in what was the fallout show from Survivor Series, which took place just last night (Nov. 20, 2011) on pay-per-view.

Before we get to the reactions to the show, it's time to give a shout out to the Cageside commenter who delivered the "Comment of the Night" in the Raw live blog thread. And that honor goes to Jon Knapik, who said what we were all thinking while Kevin Nash was cutting his promo -- "Great. Nash is drunk." Well done, my friend.

If you want full results from Raw tonight, click here for the running live blog. Time to get to reactions from the show:

  • WWE must have been trolling us with their advertisements for tonight's show. Jonah Hill was supposed to guest star and he didn't show up, leading to a lot of "creative had nothing for him" jokes on Twitter (oh sh*t, I'm putting over Twitter, I better stop). Triple H was advertised and he was nowhere to be found for reasons that are still unclear. And when the hell is Brodus Clay actually going to debut? Before or after the mystery return man shows up on Jan. 2, 2012?
  • CM Punk went back to his shoot style promo work and while I don't exactly hate it, I'm not a huge fan of it either. I like it when he calls attention to the fact that there isn't a single WWE fan on Earth that likes to be referred to as a member of the "WWE Universe" but his reality gimmick can only go so far. After all, the entire premise of pro wrestling is that we're supposed to suspend our disbelief. I can't effectively do that if you're telling me the truth all the time. Still, it's good that he has the belt back.
  • If Punk "making the WWE interesting again" means he's going to have three and a half star, pay-per-view quality matches on Raw every week then count me in. All in. The problem, of course, is that he can't work with Dolph Ziggler night in and night out. If he could, they would tear every house down from here to Bumfug, Egypt. After tonight, I see no reason to change my stance on Ziggler being the best worker in the entire company. That man can get a good match out of anyone and when he was given a big match against Punk in a prime slot (leading the second hour), he delivered.
  • I'm not the only one that rabidly disagreed with Punk when he said the fans don't want Punk vs. Ziggler, right? Everyone should want that. Every night.
  • Last note on Punk. Bill Baconhill on Twitter (there I go again) made an interesting observation that I didn't pick up on the first time around. "Did CM Punk just call John Laurinaitis out of touch because he didn't get something from a movie from 12 years ago?" Yes, yes he did.
  • Awesome Truth needed to break up whether we want to imagine best case scenarios or not. They were doomed via bad booking but the goofy over the top nature of both of their characters just didn't hold up over the long haul. When John Cena went beast mode and straight up told them both they were jokes and glorified jobbers clogging up the main event, he wasn't doing anything but voicing the same thing every one of us were already thinking. The only problem with splitting them up and having them feud is neither one of them is ready for a babyface turn. Who are we supposed to cheer for? Truth because he was attacked from behind and laid out? I don't want to cheer Truth right now, he's better as a heel. So is Miz. It would be best to just cut bait on the whole thing and send them their separate ways. Not sure we'll get that, though.

Thoughts on the rest of the show after the jump.

Star-divide

  • Zack Ryder continues getting a decent push, for his standards at least. Sure, he jobbed to Alberto Del Rio but he was given more time and allowed more offense than I expected. Del Rio made him look good and he's still over with the crowd. The sticking point with a guy like Ryder is that it's gotten to a point where he seems to be over simply because WWE won't put him over. Like he's booked into the ground but it works in his favor because it's become the cool thing to do to cheer for him despite how he's booked. That makes it tough to navigate his future, and if we can count on anything from WWE, it's that they'll botch the hell out of it.
  • Speaking of botches, meet Kevin Nash. How sad is it that he can't get through an entire promo without botching at least one line? It's quickly becoming a fantasy pro wrestling game. How long will it take for Nash to screw up his lines and fumble over his words? Always go low, Cagesiders.
  • The less said about Sheamus vs. Jack Swagger the better.
  • The Cody Rhodes vs. Booker T feud got its start tonight and the time is right for this to happen. Coming off the big program with Randy Orton, of which Rhodes surprisingly managed to come away from relatively unscathed despite scoring all of one pinfall (not clean), it's time to make him look as good as possible and restore that prominence to the Intercontinental title he was promising when he changed it to the old design. Booker will get him there, no problem. It's a program I'm looking forward to over the coming months. I can definitely dig this ... sucka.
  • Kofi Kingston is so lost without Evan Bourne. He looks especially dorky carrying around that tag team title. That thing is nothing more than a piece of tin now. And to think, just a few months ago there was plenty of talk that Triple H was planning on revitalizing the tag division. In hindsight, we all should have known better.
  • Wade Barrett does absolutely nothing for me. He never has anything interesting to say and his slow rolling style is slightly annoying and leaning the way of boredom. Inserting him into a program with Randy Orton is a good idea if they want to kill him off as a character. Orton can make him look like a superstar but why would he? I'd like to be pleasantly surprised here but I don't think that's going to happen.
  • The Diva's aren't even being given matches anymore.
  • I really missed Mark Henry on the show tonight. And Big Show's promo, which provided us with the least memorable short segment in wrestling history, makes me think they're going to keep the feud going. Bad move if they do. Time to move forward.

Overall, the show gets a C- grade from me and that's almost solely on the strength of the Punk vs. Ziggler match. I really, really want the rematch to happen at WrestleMania. As Dolph gets better and better on the mic, there's no longer any reason to saddle him with the United States title. Shoot him up to the main event, maybe by having him win the Royal Rumble.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Bill Maher Face Off On 'The View' (VIDEO)

Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Bill Maher had an incredibly awkward exchange on Tuesday's "The View," after Hasselbeck confronted Maher over a joke he told about her last year.

Maher was speaking on his HBO show about the sexual assault of CBS correspondent Lara Logan. He joked, "New rule: now that Hosni Mubarak has released Lara Logan, he must put her intrepid hotness on a plane immediately. In exchange, we will send Elisabeth Hasselbeck."

On Tuesday, Hasselbeck got her chance to grill Maher, which she appeared to have been anticipating. She read the joke back to Maher and said, "You can't sit here right now and tell me I'm wrong for saying, 'That wasn't that funny.'"

Maher responded coolly. "We do a comedy show for an audience that's perhaps different than your audience," he said. "You are a public figure. It was not aimed at you personally, but when you are a public figure, you are out there and you're fodder for comedians to make comments on."

Joy Behar also defended Maher as a fellow comedian. "We walk the ledge. It's not easy," she said. Maher and the rest of the co-hosts clearly wanted to move on from the subject. When Hasselbeck pressed Maher on whether he would make the same joke again, he replied, "If I had a crystal ball and knew I was coming here and had to spend my whole segment talking about it, no I wouldn't."

Barbara Walters also tried to push past the tension, noting that she went through "years of Babawawa." But the bickering continued to crop up in the rest of the segment. After Maher threw a jab at Republicans, Hasselbeck said, "You're so brilliant, wow, I actually feel smarter sitting next to you."

"Really? I feel like I'm in high school next to you," Maher returned. "How long ago was that?" Hasselbeck asked.

Zuccotti showdown

Do you believe the NYPD was justified in their actions Tuesday morning?

Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters moved to Foley Square in downtown Manhattan Tuesday morning after helmeted, baton-wielding police evicted them from Zuccotti Park overnight.

During a three-hour General Assembly meeting, the demonstrators plotted their possible next moves — including marches on Canal St. or on Wall St.

They also discussed marching to NYPD headquarters or occupying Manhattan Criminal Court in solidarity with the 70 to 100 protesters who were arrested during the raid.

Cleaning crews descended on Zuccotti Park and scrubbed every flat surface while scores of cops kept everyone out with metal barricades.

LIVE COVERAGE: Occupy Wall Street protesters plan march

As of 7 a.m., there were no protesters in the park — just employees of Brookfield Properties, which owns the property and asked for the cleanout.

“That was my home,” said Shane Stoops, 23, a protester from Seattle who said he had been at Zuccotti since the dawn of the protest Sept. 17.

“You see all those garbage trucks? That’s where I live now. They took my life...all my clothes, my four-man tent and mattress, all of my books and three years of drawings.”

Mayor Bloomberg said that once the cleaning is finished, the anti-greed movement can return to Zuccotti, but protesters will not be allowed to rebuild their tent city.

“Unfortunately, the park was becoming a place where people came not to protest, but rather to break laws, and in some cases, to harm others,” the mayor said in a statement about five hours after the raid.

“Protesters have had two months to occupy the park with tents and sleeping bags. Now they will have to occupy the space with the power of their arguments.”

The eviction began around 1 a.m. when a horde of cops surrounded the park and used a bullhorn to notify protesters that sanitation trucks would be clearing out the site.

“If you fail to immediately leave the park, you will be subject to arrest," they said.

The protesters were defiant at first, chanting: "Whose park? Our park! No retreat. No surrender!"

"When the cops closed in, people tried to hold on to one another. Cops pulled people out, but we went back in," said Jose Mediaville, 29, a former Marine from Brooklyn. "A white shirt got frustrated. He yelled, 'Come on, let's do this.'

"I tried to avoid them, but they got me. They smashed people in the hands and broke the human chain. They lifted me up and threw me out like a rag doll," he said.

"If they think this is the end of it, they're crazy," Steve Iskovitz, 51, a mental health counselor from Pittsburgh, said. "People will strike back."

Police began tearing up the tents wholesale by about 1:45 a.m. after throwing reporters out of the park and corralling the protesters in the center.

"The police have us surrounded," Tyrone Greenfield, 23, of Brooklyn, said as sanitation workers tossed tents into dumpsters.

One young man wearing a gas mask tore up the notice after a cop handed it to him.

"Everybody stay calm, the police want you to become violent," protesters shouted. "Do not become violent. Pass the message."

One protester, 32, who gave his name as Daryl W, called his mother. "We're about to be raided I just thought I'd let you know I love you bye," he said.

"They don't even obey their own rules," Frank Olivo, Bronx, 21, said. "What they're doing is against the law."

Some protesters sang the Beatles song "Revolution." Helicopters flew noisily overhead.

"I have not broken the law tonight," yelled protester Eamon O'Rourke as cops stuffed him into a squad car.

Occupy Wall Street sent out a message on Twitter that said cops were using pepper spray.

City Council member Ydanis Rodriguez was arrested, and a tweet alleged he was beaten and bleeding.

"They took oaths to protect and serve," Jason Lee, 36 of Brooklyn, said. "They broke that oath tonight. They destroyed what we built. That's tyranny by any definition."

Paul Kostora, head of the medical tent, said he was working with a patient when police pulled him away.

"They pulled me out stethoscope, white coat and all as I was telling them I have a patient in there," he said. "One girl has a heart condition and wasn't feeling well. They manhandled her and threw her on the ground."

By 3:30 a.m., cops had cleared the kitchen area of the park, where protesters had formed a human chain, cuffed those arrested with plastic ties and loaded them in vans.

The showdown came after protesters had vowed to "shut down Wall St." on Thursday to mark two months of occupation. "It's still on. It'll be bigger than ever. People are mobilizing now. They're wounded now and preparing for comeback," said Matt Baldwin.

Neil deGrasse Tyson sings in autotune

It’s no secret that Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of my favorite astrophysicists. So when I saw this morning that he was featured in the latest Symphony of Science video (along with Brian Cox and Carolyn Porco), I was overjoyed. But all the joys of symphonies aside, the real reason I’m posting this is to point you toward this piece Tyson did for NOVA scienceNOW explaining how autotune works. In a little less than seven minutes, we’re shown the history of autotune, how it works its magic (with a good explanation of pitch and sound sprinkled in), and end on Tyson’s singing corrected to a better note. I can’t imbed the video, so check it out here.

Police attempt to remove Occupy Portland protesters

A man waves an American flag at a rally at the Occupy Portland camp.

Police arrested nearly two dozen anti-Wall Street protesters in two different cities Saturday and tensions mounted elsewhere as local officials stepped up pressure for demonstrators to abandon their encampments.

For the second time in as many days, Oakland city officials warned protesters Saturday that they do not have the right to camp in the plaza in front of City Hall and face immediate arrest.

The eviction notices come as officials across the country urged an end to similar gatherings in the wake of three deaths in different cities, including two by gunfire.

In Salt Lake City, police arrested 19 people when protesters refused to leave a park a day after a man was found dead inside his tent at the encampment.

Authorities in Denver forced protesters to leave a downtown encampment and arrested four people for interfering with officers who removed illegally pitched tents, said police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Meanwhile, tensions were increasing late Saturday night in Portland, Ore., where Occupy protesters faced a midnight deadline to abandon an encampment at two adjacent city parks or face possible arrest.

Violence marked the protest in San Francisco Saturday where police said two demonstrators attacked two police officers in separate incidents during a march.

Police spokesman Carlos Manfredi said a protester slashed an officer's hand with a pen knife while another protester shoved an officer, causing facial cuts. He said neither officer was seriously hurt, and the assailants couldn't be located.

Demands for Oakland protesters to pack up increased after a man was shot and killed Thursday near the encampment site.

"Your activities are injurious to health, obstruct the free use of property, interfering with the comfortable enjoyment of (Frank Ogawa Plaza), and unlawfully obstruct the free passage or use of a public park or square," the notice read.

Police and a city official did not respond to requests for comment on whether police were preparing to forcibly clear the camp. Protesters said Saturday's peaceful march and rally in front of City Hall was a show of solidarity with activists in Egypt.

Oakland officials first issued the eviction notice Friday after first pleading with protesters to leave the encampment.

Police officials have said a preliminary investigation suggested the shooting resulted from a fight between two groups of men at or near the encampment. Investigators do not know if the men in the fight were associated with Occupy Oakland, but protesters said there was no connection between the shooting and the camp.

The victim has not been identified.

The shooting occurred the same day a 35-year-old military veteran apparently committed suicide in a tent at a Burlington, Vt., Occupy encampment. Police said a preliminary investigation showed the veteran fatally shot himself in the head. They said the death raised questions about whether the protest would be allowed to continue.

In Portland, Ore., Saturday, protesters with the movement dismantled large sections of their encampment amid a heavy police presence, but dozens of tents remained after nightfall and many protesters appeared determined to remain.

Mayor Sam Adams ordered the camp shut down by midnight Saturday, citing unhealthy conditions and the encampment's attraction of drug users and thieves. Paramedics treated two people suffering from apparent drug overdoses, one on Friday and one on Saturday, bringing to four the number of nonfatal overdoses inside the camp, police said.

Demonstrations rallied Saturday evening as organizers said they hope radical elements don't use violence to overshadow the movement's message of peaceful resistance to income inequality and what they see as corporate greed.

But police prepared for a possible clash, warning that dozens of anarchists may be planning a confrontation with authorities. Officers seized pieces of cement blocks Friday, saying they were told some demonstrators had plans to use them as weapons against police. They said they believe some demonstrators are building shields and trying to collect gas masks.

The arrests in Salt Lake City came after police moved into the park early in the evening where protesters had been ordered to leave by the end of the day.

Authorities remained on the scene Saturday night as debris was cleared with a parks department front-end loader.

About 150 people had been living in the camp there for weeks.

Art Raymond, a spokesman for the mayor, said they have granted the protesters permits to maintain a 24-hour presence in the parks but will not allow camping.

City officials rescinded permits for the group to stay in the parks overnight Friday, about 12 hours after a man believed to be in his 40s was found dead inside a tent at the Occupy Salt Lake City encampment, from what police said was a combination of drug use and carbon monoxide.

In Denver, where four people were arrested, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said police had advised protesters since Wednesday that their tents in Civic Center Park and on a nearby sidewalk were illegal.

Some protesters blocked a nearby street, which riot police quickly cleared. Police officers also doused a bonfire with a fire extinguisher.

Protesters have been marching in Denver for sixth straight Saturdays — with dwindling numbers.

Meanwhile, in Southern California a small group of protesters braved soggy weather on Saturday to gather for the first time under the banner of Occupy Inland Empire. Members of Occupy movements in Fontana, Redlands, Riverside, and other nearby towns marched past banks and in front of San Bernardino City Hall in what they called a "visibility action," The Sun newspaper reported.

Protesters inspired by the Occupy movement also planned to camp over the weekend in Hendy Woods State Park in Mendocino County. The park is currently closed to camping, but about 150 to 200 people pitched tents Saturday.

The protesters want the state to keep the park open next year. It is currently among 70 state parks slated to close under state budget cuts.

"This is really devastating to a lot of local people, a lot of local businesses," organizer Cyd Bernstein said.

Mexico's Secretary of Interior, Francisco Blake Mora, seen here with United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano (L) was killed in a plane crash.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The country’s top Cabinet secretary, Francisco Blake Mora, a key figure in Mexico’s battle with drug cartels, died Friday in a helicopter crash that President Felipe Calderon said was probably an accident.

Calderon said the helicopter was flying in fog when it went down in a remote area southeast of Mexico City, but that all possible causes were under investigation.

“Mexico has lost a great patriot ... and I lost a dear friend,” said Calderon, visibly struggling to maintain composure during address to the country. “He was not only an exemplary minister, he was an exemplary Mexican.”

Authorities said the undersecretary for human rights, Felipe Zamora, was among the seven others also killed, including the pilot.

Calderon appointed Blake Mora as interior secretary in July 2010. That put him in charge of coordinating domestic policies including security, human rights, migration and the president’s relation with the legislature and opposition parties.

His death, while a blow to the governmefrnt, is not likely to change policy or day-to-day operations.

Blake Mora was traveling to a prosecutors’ meeting in the neighboring state of Morelos when the helicopter went down in a mountainous area of Mexico State.

Calderon lost an earlier interior secretary, Juan Camilo Mourino, in the crash of a Learjet in Mexico City on Nov. 4, 2008. Despite widespread speculation that the accident, which killed 16, was caused by sabotage, investigators eventually blamed pilot error.

Suspicions commonly swirl around the deaths of prominent people in Mexico, and Calderon appeared to try to quell any suggestions of sabotage this time, saying Blake Mora’s helicopter “was always under guard” in the hangar of Mexico’s equivalent of the Secret Service and that it had recently undergone maintenance.

One of Blake Mora’s last postings on his Twitter account commemorated the loss of Mourino.

“Today we remember Juan Camilo Mourino three years after his death, a person who was working to build a better Mexico,” Blake Mora tweeted on Nov. 4.

Blake Mora, 45, started his political career in the mid-1990s as an official in his native Tijuana and served as a federal congressman through the 2000s, as well as interior secretary of Baja California.

As Calderon’s point man in the government’s war against organized crime, he frequently traveling to the country’s most dangerous places for meetings with besieged state and local security officials.

He was an embodiment of the Mexican government’s get-tough attitude, publicly pledging to bring the fight to the traffickers instead of backing down.

“Organized crime, in its desperation, resorts to committing atrocities that we can’t and shouldn’t tolerate as a government and as a society,” he said.

He also oversaw response to disasters, such as flooding and the massive oil pipeline explosion that laid waste to parts of the central city of San Martin Texmelucan last year, killing at least 28 people.

He led the creation of a new national identity card for youths under 18, with modern features including digitalized fingerprints and iris images, to prevent criminals from using false IDs.

Blake Mora’s funeral was scheduled for Saturday.

Calderon canceled many of his appearances, including a trip to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting of world leaders in Hawaii next week.

It was hard for many to believe that two interior secretaries could die in air accidents in the same administration.

“This is very unfortunate,” said Sinaloa Congressman Manuel Clouthier, whose own father, a popular politician in Calderon’s National Action Party, died in a still-unexplained highway accident in 1989. “There are many coincidences because now we have two interior ministers (lost) in one presidential term ... who knows if we’ll ever really know what happened.”

In the crash that killed Mourino, the jet smashed into rush-hour traffic in a posh Mexico City business district, killing all nine on board and seven on the ground. Mexican investigators blamed the Learjet 45 crash on the turbulence from a larger plane flying ahead.

The investigation found that the pilots were slow to follow the control tower’s instructions to reduce speed and appeared to be nearly one nautical mile too close behind a Boeing 767-300 on the same flight path to Mexico City’s international airport.

Also killed in the crash was former anti-drug prosecutor Jose Luis Santiago Vasconcelos, who had been the target of at least one previous assassination plot.

The Mexican government provided a detailed account of the crash aimed at quelling widespread rumors that the plane was brought down by powerful and increasingly violent drug cartels.

In 2005, a helicopter crash blamed on poor weather conditions killed Mexico’s top police official, public safety secretary Ramon Martin Huerta, who was head of federal police, and seven other people.

Manny Paquiao VS. Marquez Nov. 2011

an 8-1 favorite heading into tonight's fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS — It began when Bugsy Siegel dumped his first dice table on the Nevada sand dunes. They gift-wrapped the pleasure palaces that followed until they looked as though Caligula had decorated them in Early Decadence, opened the doors and challenged:

"Beat us if you can."

You may have noticed that the casinos are still standing.

Somewhere in that there is a message.

For those pilgrims inclined toward numerology, it beams down at them from the front wall of the MGM Grand Casino. Manny Pacquiao is a staggering 8-1 favorite to beat Juan Manuel Marquez when they fight here tonight. The House is rarely wrong.

But just as sure as God made little green apples and it don't rain in Vegas in the summertime, those odds will fall a little when the most naïve among the congregation rush forward today to make a killing on the House's "mistake."

After all, this is a city where dreams and hope and faith are the opiate of the tourists. These particular fight odds should be posted with an asterisk that leads to a fine print message below that reads:

"When we say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, we mean your money."

Be aware that this town has seen them all — every card counter ... every system player ... every roulette wheel note-taker and every oddball slot junkie — who thinks he can outthink a machine that is programmed to take in more money than all of the French Riviera spends on bikinis before it spits out a single quarter.

Still, the House does occasionally lose, although in boxing it hasn't happened here with staggering odds since Mike Tyson, a 20-1 favorite, lost his first fight against Evander Holyfield in this same building 15 years ago.

The question, therefore, is what does Juan Manuel Marquez have to do to win this fight as the long shot among all recent long shots? It's still a fight and it could happen. After all, even Muhammad Ali was indeed a 7-1 long shot when he beat Sonny Liston the first time.

Well, Marquez and his trainer, Nacho Beristain, believe they have the answer. As a result, tonight we will learn whether bigger is better, tougher, meaner or just plain slower. Marquez, a natural lightweight, has bulked up to come in around 142 pounds. You can see it in his chest. You can see it in his biceps.

He has fought above 138 pounds only once in his entire 59-bout career. That was at 142 against Floyd Mayweather Jr., when he was sluggish, slower and ineffective. Conversely, Pacquiao, who weighed 143 at the official weigh-in yesterday, moved up the ladder from weight division to weight division over a more logical period of time.

Now couple that with the probability that Marquez plans to leave his counter-puncher style in the dressing room and come out aggressively at the very first bell.

If he does, then we just might see a spectacular first round, one possibly reminiscent of the opening one Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler put together in this very same town back in 1987.

If that happens, we will be seeing a far different Marquez than we have ever seen before. And we also know — and Marquez admits — that either way, we will be seeing a different Manny Paquiao then the one who went life and death with Marquez in 2004 and gain in 2008.

For one thing — and the tape of those two fights reveals it — Pacquiao was still a fighter with a mediocre right hand back then. He used it almost as little as Joe Frazier did. So for eight years, every training session in Roach's Wild Card gym in Hollywood was also a teaching session. He learned how to use the right hook and the right uppercut to complete his arsenal. Now he can knock you out with either hand.

Both Marquez and Beristain insist they will be the aggressor in this fight. At least that's how they figure to start.

But he is 38 years old, and fighters are like the rest of us. Under stress, all the good intentions tend to vaporize.

It will be Pacquiao's job to make that stress happen. In all probability, he will need to temper that desire with some patience, but in the matter of skills, he should be capable of doing just that.

Marquez has made it a point all week long to stress his confidence in his ability to make the switch from counter-puncher to aggressor. He knows that could very possibly be his only chance to win.

"I like that," Freddie Roach said. "Let's face it, when you put muscle on, you put muscle on for one reason, and that's to exchange (punches). If he (Marquez) wants to exchange with us, I think that's great.

"You lose a lot of confidence the minute you get knocked on your ass."

Pacquiao will win. Knockout or decision? Marquez's choice of tactics will decide how it happens.
